A Visual Food Guide

Foodlets officially begins Bangalore Operations

Comments (7) | Friday, May 27, 2011

Here come the monsoons lashing around in frail spells down the coastal lines as I prepare to head-out and map the culinary depths of India’s own Silicon valley – Bangalore

Having meted out a brief spell covering the cuisines diffused into the beautiful topography of Goa – an experience I privilege and wish to re-start in a more free flowing manner upon the dawn of the new tourist season – I hope to use this experience in a much more definite strategy as we descend upon the IT capital.

Born of the land of Goa & having lived here a major part of my life my taste-buds mostly dwelled in the delicacies of the traditional Goan cuisine, quite oblivious to the spectrum of cuisines Goa had to offer. However the Foodlet coverage stint in Goa, has not only left my appetite enlightened but has also given us a deeper insight into the passion and dedication of these amazing people that cook these delicious potions, and their expectations from the multitude they serve. An additive that has strengthened our drive to be the best food centric site online.

Thru Foodlets we strive to capture and present to you visually, the essence of the entire operation and effort undertaken by these cookery wizards in a manner that will not only tease your tongue but will also culminate in a more interactive and fulfilling experience; an experience that may be shared, discussed and relished thru a virtual world.

In conclusion I sincerely appeal to each one of you to help us in building a foodlet friendly world.

Peace & Love
Rohit Barreto

The most intriguing food on Foodlets - Part 1

Comments (3) | Monday, May 23, 2011

Nothing would be more tiresome than eating and drinking if God had not made them a pleasure as well as a necessity.
- Voltaire

Foodlets is based on the concept that the pleasure in food is not just in eating but also in looking at it. Just browsing through the food at Foodlets is bound to give you immense joy and boost your mood. And of course, there’s the occasional foodlet that intrigues you, makes you exclaim in wonder - “How did they do that?” or “I wonder how it tastes” or “They put that along with that! I can’t wait to try it out!”.

This is the first part in a series where I’ll be trying to list out the most intriguing food at Foodlets.

#1 Gulab Jamun Cheesecake

   Created By:

    Available at:
   Bliss
   ECC Road, Whitefield, Bangalore

   Comment on this foodlet

This is one of my favorites and it has an extraordinary taste! I always try to imagine how they must have made it!
  1. Prepare the cheesecake mixture.
  2. Add a layer for the base
  3. Add a layer of Gulab Jamuns
  4. Add a layer of of cheesecake mixture
  5. Sprinkle another layer of Gulab jamuns on the top
  6. Bake
  7. Cut the cake into pieces in such a way that there are half-cut jamuns at the sides. :)

#2 Kaalimeeri (Black Pepper) Ice cream

   Created By:

    Available at:
   Zaika (Spice Cream)
Karishma Society, Off Karve Road, Kothrud, Pune

   Comment on this foodlet

Spicy ice cream? Who would have thought of that? I wonder if they have one with chili flakes in it!

#3 Crab Gratin

   Created By:

    Available at:
   Fusion
Majorda Beach Road, Majorda, Salcette, Goa

   Comment on this foodlet

Gratin is a widely used fench culinary technique in food preparation in which an ingredient is topped with a browned crust, often using breadcrumbs, grated cheese, egg and/or butter1. Sounds appetizing!

#4 Neer Dosa

   Created By:

    Available at:
   Coastal Junction
11th Main, 80 Feet Road, Indiranagar, Bangalore

   Comment on this foodlet

Neer means water in Kannada. The batter used for preparing this dosa is very watery and thin, hence the name.

#5 Apple Pie Latte

   Created By:

    Available at:
   Costa Coffee
1 A Cross Rd, Koramangala, Bangalore

   Comment on this foodlet

Of course they put Apple Pie Syrup in the latte, but I like to think of it as crushed apple pie added to the latte! Anyways the taste is awesome!

#6 Prawns in Blanket

   Created By:

    Available at:
   Terracotta Coconut Creek
Near Dabolim Airport(Goa Airport), Bogmalo Beach, Goa

  Comment on this foodlet

What is the blanket made of? How does it taste? What did they marinate the prawns in? Whats that accompanying sauce? Do they serve it in a Pyramid? Are some of the questions that come to the mind!

#7 Prawn Cocktail

   Created By:

    Available at:
   Stone House
   Fort Aguada Road, Candolim, Goa

   Comment on this foodlet

Now this is a cocktail which our teetotaller friends can enjoy! Looks like ice-cream at first glance till you spot the egg slice on the top! I wonder whether its actually a cocktail of various types of prawns!

#8 Kingfish Peri Peri

   Created By:

    Available at:
   Fisherman's Wharf
Near Holiday Inn, Cavelossim - Salcette, Goa

   Comment on this foodlet

Like Crime master Gogo, I ask - “Ye Peri Peri Kya hai? Yeh Peri Peri?” (What the hell is this Peri Peri?)

Peri Peri is a piquant sauce made of red masala, red wine vinegar, parsley, fermented pepper paste and is a favourite in Goan cuisine2. I like the idea very very much!

#9 Mirchi Batata Wada

   Created By:

    Available at:
   Rajdhani
   Forum Value Mall, Whitefield, Bangalore

   Comment on this foodlet

I like the 'get 2 for the price of one' kind of foodlets! In Goa, I was mostly used to having Mirchi Pakoda and of course Batata Wada, that is why I was pleasantly surprised when I came across Mirchi Batata Wada - the taste still lingers in my mouth! Yum! Yum!

#10 Chocolate Kahlua Mousse

   Created By:

    Available at:
   Toscano
   Forum Value Mall, Whitefield, Bangalore

   Comment on this foodlet

It’s a feast for the eyes as well and quite yummy! Tastes best with white chocolate.

#11 Prawns Ball Fry

   Created By:

    Available at:
   Alua
Near Gande's Grill, Chowgm Road, Sangaldo , Goa

   Comment on this foodlet

Chopped prawns rolled into balls and deep fried. Ingenious!

#12 Chicken Steak in Whiskey Marinade

   Created By:

    Available at:
   Stone House
   Fort Aguada Road, Candolim, Goa

   Comment on this foodlet

Now why did the drunk Chicken cross the road? To get marinated in more whiskey, of course! The liquor does impart it a unique taste. Hic!

Of course this list is entirely based on my tastes and what cuisines I have been acquainted with so far. However, the reader is welcome to give his suggestions and I can include it in the next part.

Beta Release - Foodlets gets Bigger, Better and Faster

Comments (1) | Sunday, May 1, 2011

The Foodlets Beta version was released online on 17th April 2011.

Before the beta we hosted a prototype version. The prototype was up for specific reasons
  • To introduce the concept of a visual food guide to food lovers
  • To understand which features/solutions engage users best
  • To show restaurants the product we were building and make them realize how it helps

In short the prototype helped us build a product users wanted instead of us building what we thought they wanted.

The major changes in the beta version are
  • New logo and icons
  • New page layouts and colors
  • New foodlet Polaroids and larger (600*600) images on product pages
  • Easy Navigation. ‘Quick Links’ panel on the right side. Huge footer listing the important links
  • ‘Affirm’ feature. Affirm = I ate this dish and I loved it
  • Auto disappearing Flash Popups for feedback to user actions
  • Faster page downloads through use of Ajax components, compact JS + CSS
  • Plenty of new food from new restaurants :)

Do check the exciting new beta here http://foodlets.in and write to us (feedback) about what you liked and disliked the most. If you are on FB you could answer this question.
